Carminati: flexo prepress with superior quality

4

Carminati represents a benchmark in the corrugated board sector thanks to proprietary solutions such as the OL Dot and OL.C technologies. With a team of 25 people and two production divisions, plate making and digital printing via TwentyPrint, the company continues to innovate by choosing Hybrid Software’s Packz editor to raise efficiency, precision, and quality. Collaboration with Roveco foresees a three-year shared research program, further strengthened by the use of the same software platform based on IT integration and R&D

Originally active in the production of printing plates for the paper bag and flexible packaging sectors, the company has redirected its know-how toward corrugated board, now Carminati’s core business, achieving quality recognized by the market and evidenced by the Best in Show 2024 award and several Best in Flexo recognitions.

“To increase print performance and result repeatability, in 2009 we internally developed a patented solution, OL Dot, for creating flat-top dots, a solution that forms the foundation of today’s production infrastructure for flexo plates. OL Dot is a technology with an inclined flat-top dot, designed to improve ink transfer, limit dot gain, and reduce typical corrugated-printing issues such as washboarding. The inclined geometry ensures a more controlled contact area and greater uniformity in midtones”, explains Carlo Carminati, company owner.

In 2019, the OL.C technology was developed, enabling the production of plates with variable thickness, greater in solids and decreasing in screens. The controlled thickness profile allows better air release, sharper screens, and selective pressure applied only in solids, reducing wear and mechanical stress.

Carminati employs 25 people and is organized into two operational divisions: production of printing plates using advanced photopolymer technologies, and a division dedicated to digital printing through TwentyPrint portal, which provides direct-print services on forex, wood, plexiglass, composite materials, and nonwoven fabrics using large-format digital systems.

Integrating Packz software into the workflow

Carminati

“We chose Packz because we already knew the software and felt it suited our needs. We concluded that the latest Packz releases offered something more compared to the software we were using, so we took the plunge and embarked on this adventure, installing it in spring 2025”, says Carlo. Packz modules make high-quality editing accessible and easier for operators. Packz is a powerful editor that allows even users with limited skills to easily modify native PDF content. The software includes comprehensive tools to streamline workflows, keeping editing in native PDF format all the way to output. Packz manages every stage, from design import to final output, integrating advanced prepress functions such as trapping, separation management, barcode creation and recognition, while its 64-bit multi-core architecture ensures optimal performance. It is extremely fast in trapping, saving changes, opening PDFs, and also faster in preview generation, zooming, and content navigation. And all of this works even on complex files.

Integration into Carminati’s IT structure was straightforward and well received by operators, who transitioned from the previous software to Packz in just fifteen days. Initial training, followed by continuous technical support from Hybrid Software, will allow the company to progressively exploit the full potential of Packz. “Hybrid Software provides us with ongoing support, used mainly to deepen advanced features rather than to solve technical issues. I am fully satisfied with choosing Packz, indispensable for ensuring greater productivity and precision in file preparation. A decisive role was played by the availability and professionalism of Hybrid Software’s technicians, who proved to be attentive and customer-oriented partners”, Carlo concludes.

Collaboration with Roveco

Carminati has launched a three-year research program with Roveco, based on sharing technical expertise and implementing a unified IT platform. The fact that both companies use Packz facilitates format standardization, file interoperability, and the management of shared clients, enabling a stronger and more streamlined communication flow.
