It has become more mature and more structured. Yet it has lost neither speed nor scale. It has simply transformed. Even with more moderate growth rates, the overall volume remains enormous and continues to generate opportunities throughout the supply chain. Chinese consumers are demanding, accustomed to constant change, and they drive an entire industry forced to reinvent itself continuously. The exhibition positions itself as a space where business is built concretely through targeted meetings and consolidated relationships.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, what many industry professionals primarily knew through events such as <strong>SinoCorrugated and SinoFoldingCarton<\/strong> has gradually evolved into something broader. The technological gap with Europe has narrowed and, in many cases, has nearly disappeared. The solutions on offer are increasingly complete, integrated, and competitive. However, an important difference remains in terms of know-how and experience, particularly in process management and after-sales service. Another distinctive aspect is the operational mindset: the Chinese market prioritizes speed and immediate responsiveness, whereas Europe continues to place stronger emphasis on analysis and prevention. This approach can represent a challenge, but also a key to understanding how the market functions. The balance between rapid execution, technological growth, and continuous adaptability is what makes the Chinese market so compelling to observe today. It is necessary to listen to those who experience this market every day, dealing directly with its opportunities, logics, and complexities. During our visit to the exhibition, we interviewed Roberto Galbiati, CEO of RE China, the Chinese branch of the Italian RE Group, active in the distribution of technologies and solutions for the printing, converting, and packaging industries across the Asian market.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Roberto, how do you see the Chinese packaging and converting market today?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe market is certainly still growing, although not at the pace seen a few years ago. China is an extremely dynamic environment, with a population that is highly demanding and accustomed to change. This is directly reflected in packaging: products change frequently, and consequently so do the ways they are packaged. A very concrete example is food delivery, which is extremely widespread here. Ordering food at home is a simple gesture repeated millions of times every day. Every delivery carries multiple layers of packaging, each with a precise function and often with carefully designed aesthetics, silently activating an entire industrial supply chain: printing, converting, materials, and logistics\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Are there substantial differences compared to Europe, even in the way business is conducted?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, and they are quite evident. In China, business is far more volume-driven: lower margins, but extremely high quantities. This leads to very intense competition, especially on price. There are dynamics that would be difficult to imagine in Europe. For example, in the corrugated board sector, profit is often not made on the box itself, but on the paper. Boxes are used to generate volume and secure better purchasing conditions for raw materials. This drives companies to lower prices aggressively in order to gain market share. Does it still carry value?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, Made in Italy is still perceived as valuable. There is a strong appeal toward Italian products and, more generally, toward European brands. That said, the gap has narrowed considerably. Chinese companies have improved tremendously, both in terms of quality and technology. They were already competitive on price, but today they have come much closer in terms of product quality as well. Where I still see a difference is in know-how. Many times, they replicate technologies without fully mastering the process or possessing the same level of experience. Over time, that can make a significant difference\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>How important are service and technical support?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is one of the most critical aspects. Chinese customers expect immediate solutions. They are not interested in understanding the origin of a problem; they simply want it solved right away. If something does not work, they expect it to be replaced immediately. This is very different from the European approach, where companies tend to stop, analyze, identify the root cause, and solve the issue permanently. Here, that step is often considered secondary. Speed is what matters. This can be a limitation, but it is also a characteristic that companies must understand when operating in this market\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Speaking about the exhibition itself: what was your impression of WEPACK 2026?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy impression is positive. I did not have the opportunity to visit the entire exhibition in detail, so I would rather not comment too extensively on innovations, but what stood out to me was the number of visitors. There were many people, both on the first day and in the following days. International attendance has also increased. I noticed many visitors from India, for example, as well as stronger participation from other countries. This means the exhibition is becoming increasingly international. At WEPACK we presented their new viscometer, the G21, designed for specific corrugated board applications, particularly with water-based inks. It is a product we strongly believe in. We noticed a fair amount of interest, and several machine manufacturers came to learn more about it, but it is clear that the process will take time. Chinese machine builders tend to keep machine prices as low as possible and therefore avoid adding optional features. For this reason, the strategy must change: we need to work directly with end users. Once the end customer understands the value and benefits, they will begin requesting it as part of the machine specifications. It is a slower process, but probably a more effective one\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Will sustainability and regulations change the Chinese market?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope so. If China begins aligning more closely with European regulations, this will inevitably lead to change. Today there are far fewer restrictions compared to Europe, and this is reflected in both costs and the solutions adopted. If stricter standards are introduced, for example regarding solvent management or safety, companies will need to adapt. And this could create new opportunities for more advanced technologies\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>You also made an interesting organizational decision: hiring a Western professional who speaks Chinese. What led to that choice?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"x_elementToProof\">\u201cIt is a choice driven by the need to further improve communication with the local market. Although English is the international reference language, not all the key contacts at the companies we visit speak it fluently. For this reason, we introduced a Western professional who speaks Chinese, in order to facilitate dialogue and make relationships more effective. Moreover, Chinese clients greatly appreciate this kind of attention, as it demonstrates respect and a willingness to build a more direct relationship. China remains an enormous market, with commercial and manufacturing opportunities. Local companies are improving rapidly and can become valuable partners for sourcing and development of new solutions. At the same time, it is now essential to maintain balance and avoid depending entirely on a single market. Global dynamics over recent years have demonstrated this very clearly.
