{"id":64441,"date":"2019-11-27T13:46:55","date_gmt":"2019-11-27T12:46:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.converter.it\/packaging-industry-the-long-term-growth-of-end-user-sectors\/"},"modified":"2021-06-22T17:23:49","modified_gmt":"2021-06-22T15:23:49","slug":"packaging-industry-the-long-term-growth-of-end-user-sectors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.converter.it\/en\/packaging-industry-the-long-term-growth-of-end-user-sectors\/","title":{"rendered":"Packaging industry: the long-term growth of end-user sectors"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><small>Opportunities for companies in the Packaging supply chain from the Premium growths of main end-users sectors<\/small><\/h2>\n<p>By ExportPlanning-Sistema Informativo Ulisse<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><em><strong>In 2019, the growth of world trade in packaged consumer products continued&#8230;<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The <b>2019 pre-estimates<\/b><sup>1<\/sup>, formulated by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.studiabo.it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">StudiaBo<\/a> on the basis of the most recent economic data, indicate the <span class=\"mag-verde\"><b>continuation of the growth path of world trade in the main packaging&#8217;s end-user sectors<\/b><\/span>.<br \/>\nIn 2019, global demand for <b>Packaged Food and Beverage<\/b><sup>2<\/sup> showed estimated <span class=\"mag-verde\"><b>growth at constant prices of more than 5 percentage points<\/b><\/span>, for a pre-consumption in euros of about 512 billion euros (573 billion dollars).<br \/>\nSimilarly, at year end, global demand for <b>Perfumes and Cosmetics<\/b><sup>3<\/sup>, thanks to an <span class=\"mag-verde\"><b>increase at constant prices of about 4 percentage points<\/b><\/span>, is estimated to exceed 86 billion euros (96 billion dollars); global demand for <b>Personal- and Home-Care<\/b><sup>4<\/sup> products has risen by almost <span class=\"mag-verde\"><b>3 percentage points at constant prices<\/b><\/span>, with a pre-consumption estimated at around \u20ac156 billion (174 Bn $).<br \/>\nLast but not least, global demand for <b>Drugs &amp; Medicaments<\/b><sup>5<\/sup> is experiencing an increase that by the end of 2019 should be close to <span class=\"mag-verde\"><b>6 percentage points at constant prices<\/b><\/span>, bringing the value of world trade to 546 billion euros (about 612 billion dollars).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><em><strong>&#8230;confirming particularly favorable medium-period dynamics in the quantities&#8230;<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The growth performance of global demand in the main end-user packaging sectors appears to be <b>above average not only in the most recent period, but also in all the historical experience of the current century<\/b>: in the average of the period <b>2001-2019<\/b>, the Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) measured at constant prices &#8211; thus excluding any inflationary or currency effects &#8211; is <span class=\"mag-verde\"><b>+3.8% in the Personal and Home Care<\/b><\/span> sector, <span class=\"mag-verde\"><b>+4.4% in the Packaged Food and Beverage<\/b><\/span> sector, <span class=\"mag-verde\"><b>+6.4% in the Perfumes and Cosmetics<\/b><\/span> sector, and <span class=\"mag-verde\"><b>+8.2% in the Drugs &amp; Medicaments<\/b><\/span> sector, compared to a growth benchmark of +3.3% for total world trade in goods.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32556\" src=\"https:\/\/www.converter.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Graph1_WorldTrade_EN.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"709\" height=\"350\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These growth rates confirm not only the <b>&#8220;acyclical&#8221; nature of demand<\/b> in these sectors in a context of a significant slowdown in the international cycle- as written in a previous <a href=\"http:\/\/www.exportplanning.com\/en\/magazine\/article\/2019\/10\/30\/international-trade-performance-by-country-and-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article<\/a>-, but also the presence of driving factors such as the <b>growing importance of the Premium segments<\/b>, as documented by the growth in quality purchases in all these sectors, some <b>&#8220;fashion&#8221; effects<\/b> (for example, the growth in Asia of the skin care phenomenon) and <b>demographic factors<\/b> (linked to the average ageing of the population) in many high-income countries.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><em><strong>&#8230;and also the growing importance of the Premium segments<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The growth performance at constant prices, which is more dynamic than the average, is also associated with an <b>upgrading of demand<\/b> in the main consumer packaged goods sectors.<br \/>\nConsidering the incidence of the <b>High and Mid-High price bands<\/b> on total world trade by sector, the average for the period 2001-2019 shows particularly significant increases for <span class=\"mag-verde\"><b>Perfumes and Cosmetics<\/b><\/span> (with the relevance of the &#8220;Premium&#8221; segments rising from 5.4% in 2000 to almost <span class=\"mag-verde\"><b>54% in 2019<\/b><\/span>) and <span class=\"mag-verde\"><b>Drugs &amp; Medicaments<\/b><\/span> (with the Premium segments this year representing <span class=\"mag-verde\"><b>more than 70% of the value traded worldwide<\/b><\/span>).<br \/>\nThe phenomenon is less accentuated in the <span class=\"mag-verde\"><b>Packaged Food and Beverage<\/b><\/span> sector, where <span class=\"mag-verde\"><b>28.4% of the value traded worldwide<\/b><\/span> is attributable to the Premium segments; this is, however, a higher incidence than that shown by the total goods (25.9%). Moreover, it should be noted that in the last decade (essentially, from the beginning of the Great Recession to the present) in the Packaged Food and Beverage sector, the upgrading process has intensified, with only the High Price Range doubling its relative importance (from 6 to 12 per cent) and the Medium-High Price Range consolidating its share (above 16 per cent).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32557\" src=\"https:\/\/www.converter.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Graph2_PriceRange_EN.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"709\" height=\"440\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #33cccc;\"><em><strong>Growth opportunities in the 2020-2023 scenario<\/strong><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The <b>forecasts<\/b> recently formulated by StudiaBo<sup>6<\/sup>, starting from the latest World Economic Outlook of the International Monetary Fund, show for the <b>2020-2023<\/b> period <span class=\"mag-verde\"><b>particularly accelerated trends for world trade in packaged consumer products<\/b><\/span>.<br \/>\nIn the 2020-2023 scenario, it is expected that on average more accelerated dynamics will continue for the sectors that are most users of packaging: in particular, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.exportplanning.com\/analytics\/getiframefull\/GpEnhlRV9Ndr69HF\/700\/1100\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><u>CAGR of +8.2 in $ (+7.6% in euro) forecast for the Drugs &amp; Medicaments<\/u><\/b><\/a> sector, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.exportplanning.com\/analytics\/getiframefull\/Ls8fsHzGcgqBGNta\/700\/1100\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><u>CAGR of +6.5 in $ (+5.9% in euro) for the Perfumes and Cosmetics<\/u><\/b><\/a> sector, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.exportplanning.com\/analytics\/getiframefull\/laCZwhSQCtnJvrk3\/700\/1100\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b><u>+5.9% in $ (+5.3% in euro) for Packaged Food and Beverage<\/u><\/b><\/a>, against a forecast of growth in $ values of +5.7% (+5.1% in euro) for total goods.
