THE LEONARDO ENGRAVING SERIES AND THE “KISS TOUCH” FINISHING
Simec Group recently released a wide range of engravings, named Leonardo, and an anilox surface finishing which is extremely fine and soft, named “Kiss Touch”.
The structure and shape of the cells are quite important to ensure a precise and constant ink release over time and to avoid any early and unexplained reduction of the ink volume transferred to the printing machine.
For this reason, Simec has developed the Leonardo series, a type of engraving obtained by means of the last generation laser equipment of the Thermal Yag class. There are 6 at Simec and they allow engraving up to 1000 lines/cm for increased ink volumes transferred to the surface to be printed with respect to other laser engraving types.
Thanks to the “multi hit” process (which is a peculiarity of the Thermal Yag) it is possible to obtain cells with steep walls. This means that, depth being the same, the capacity of the Leonardo cells is higher, if compared to that of the cells engraved with other systems, and therefore the ink volume transferred by each cell is higher.
Thermal Yag laser systems can be utilized with a variable number of hits and therefore the final result can vary depending on the equipment setting. Obviously, this requires the standardization of the measuring system of cells and volumes. For this reason, Simec has created the FMRG testing certification which provides the printers with detailed information about cells shape and capacity. This combination engraving-certification enables the printers to set up their printing equipment precisely and quickly and consequently to reduce the wastes during machine set-up.
Well-done laser engravings imply a contact surface between doctor blade and anilox of at least 90-95%. To this aim, Simec has developed a special super-finishing of the engraving, named Kiss-Touch, able to guarantee this "soft" and constant contact. The result is a reduced wear of the doctor blade. Thanks to this "Kiss Touch" finishing also the problems of scoring lines and ink accumulation on the blade and in the chamber are significantly reduced.
The last generation flexo printing machines are equipped with automatic washing systems of both doctor blade and anilox. Especially with these machines, a well-finished anilox surface may help reducing the scoring line problems (which are usually the result of the washing operation). The benefits coming from this Kiss-Touch finishing are: dramatically reduced production and maintenance costs.
“The Simec Concept” states Emilio Della Torre, CEO at Simec “was created to provide all customers with solutions to make their activity more profitable and both the Leonardo engraving series and the Kiss-Touch are two more steps towards this direction. The Leonardo series by Thermal Yag laser equipped with the latest development by ALE (consisting in a modulation system) enables to engrave a wide range of cell configurations to allow printers to manage any kind of job and the Kiss Touch finishing allows to get better printing results and diminished wear of the printing machine parts in contact with the anilox.
